"The Second Temple was built on the site of the First Temple 70 years after its destruction. Construction was begun in 538 B.C.E. and finally completed in 515; the process is described in the Book of Ezra. It was refurbished and enlarged by King Herod during the 1st century B.C.E. and remained in use until it was destroyed by General Titus and the conquering Roman Empire in 70 C.E. Today, the Western Wall in Jerusalem is revered because it is a remnant of the outside walls of the Second Temple mount." (JPS)
